Obamanomics: Price of ground beef hit another record high in February

No, you’re not imagining it. You can’t afford to eat beef.

The average price of a pound of ground beef climbed to another record high in February, hitting $4.238 per pound, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

It first broke the $4 barrier back in August 2014, and it’s been climbing ever since.

Because cows cause Global Warming. And the price of beef must necessarily skyrocket. Thanks Obama!

Reports that sales of Hamburger Helper are also up could not be confirmed at press time. But it’s a pretty safe bet.

Soylent Pinko: Obama’s food police want you to go vegan

To “save the planet,” of course.

The federal committee responsible for nutrition guidelines is calling for the adoption of “plant-based” diets, taxes on dessert, trained obesity “interventionists” at worksites, and electronic monitoring of how long Americans sit in front of the television.

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) released its far-reaching 571-page report of recommendations to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Thursday, which detailed its plans to “transform the food system.”

DGAC said its recommendations to eat less meat are intended to “maximize environmental sustainability” out of concerns for climate change.

Every time you eat a steak, Mother Gaia cries.

Oh, BTW, they’re going to tax your dessert too.

DGAC called for diet and weight management interventions by “trained interventionists” in healthcare settings, community locations, and worksites.

“Government at local, state, and national levels, the health care system, schools, worksites, community organizations, businesses, and the food industry all have critical roles in developing creative and effective solutions,” they said.

DGAC also called for policy interventions to “reduce unhealthy options,” limit access to high calorie foods in public buildings, “limit the exposure” of advertisements for junk food, a soda tax, and taxing high sugar and salt items and dessert.

Michelle Obama’s Food Police are coming for you. Put down that eclair, step away from the table, and nobody gets hurt.

Wanna bet these “guidelines” get written into Obamacare regulations?

Hey, if they can tax you for not buying health insurance they can certainly tax you for buying Oreos. And trust me, they will.

Move over MREs, make room for PREs: Pizza Ready To Eat

Yes it’s really pizza, with a shelf life of 3 years, and it’s coming to a battlefield near you.

They call it the holy grail of ready-to-eat meals for soldiers: a pizza that can stay on the shelf for up to three years and still remain good to eat.

Soldiers have been asking for pizza since lightweight individual field rations — known as meals ready to eat, or MREs — replaced canned food in 1981 for soldiers in combat zones or areas where field kitchens cannot be set up.

Researchers at a U.S. military lab in Massachusetts are closing in on a recipe that doesn’t require any refrigeration or freezing.

“You can basically take the pizza, leave it on the counter, packaged, for three years and it’d still be edible,” said Michelle Richardson, a food scientist at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center.

Ah, but how does it taste?

Most soldiers haven’t tried it because it’s still being developed, but Jill Bates, who runs the lab, said she was happy after tasting the latest prototype batch of pepperoni. She describes it as a pan pizza, with a crust that’s a little moist and not super-crispy.

“It pretty much tastes just like a typical pan pizza that you would make at home and take out of the oven or the toaster oven,” she said. “The only thing missing from that experience would be it’s not hot when you eat it. It’s room temperature.”

The lab brings in food technologists to taste recipes and give feedback.

One of the technologists, Dan Nattress, agreed the pizza deserves a thumbs-up.

“It tastes pretty much what you would get from a pizza parlor,” he said.

Is this a great country or what?

Big Government Knows Best: FDA to ban all trans fats

Choice? That’s just a feminist slogan. The nanny-staters can’t actually let you choose anything, including what you eat.

Heart-clogging trans fats have been slowly disappearing from grocery aisles and restaurant menus in the last decade. Now, the Food and Drug Administration is finishing the job.

The FDA plans to announce later Thursday that it will require the food industry to gradually phase out all trans fats, saying they are a threat to people’s health. Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the move could prevent 20,000 heart attacks a year and 7,000 deaths.

Hamburg said that while the amount of trans fats in the country’s diet has declined dramatically in the last decade, they “remain an area of significant public health concern.” The trans fats have long been criticized by nutritionists, and New York and other local governments have banned them.

The agency isn’t yet setting a timeline for the phase-out, but will collect comments for two months before officials determine how long it will take. Different foods may have different timelines, depending how easy it is to substitute.

“We want to do it in a way that doesn’t unduly disrupt markets,” says Michael Taylor, FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods. Still, he says, “industry has demonstrated that it is by and large feasible to do.”

To phase them out, the FDA said it had made a preliminary determination that trans fats no longer fall in the agency’s “generally recognized as safe” category, which is reserved for thousands of additives that manufacturers can add to foods without FDA review. Once trans fats are off the list, anyone who wants to use them would have to petition the agency for a regulation allowing it, and that would be unlikely to be approved.

Can you imagine the Pilgrims asking the FDA for permission to eat the first Thanksgiving dinner?

Yeah, me neither. We’ve fallen a long way from the ideals of liberty espoused by our forefathers.

If you’re hungry and you know it, eat a bug

News You Can Use from the United Nations:

A U.N. food agency is pushing a new kind of diet for a hungry world. It ranks high in nutritional value and gets good grades for protecting the environment: edible insects.

The Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday hailed the likes of grasshoppers, ants and other members of the insect world as an underutilized food for people, livestock and pets.

A new report says 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects. Insects are high in protein and minerals, need far less feed per kilo of mass than cattle do and produce far less greenhouse gas per kilo than pigs.

“Mom, not bug stew again! Why can’t we eat the stuff UN bureaucrats eat?”

“Because we have to save the planet, that’s why. Also the UN’s pet dictators stole all the Real Food.”
