Get your Federal Drone License by Feb 19, 2016, or pay a $27,000 dollar fine

If you own a drone, or if Santa is putting one under your tree this Christmas, you’d better be aware of Barack Obama’s latest regulatory overreach.

Every drone owner in the United States is required to register for a Federal Drone License by February 19, 2016. Failure to register could result in a penalty of $27,000, and/or 3 years in jail.

The online registration would apply to owners of small drones weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds, including payloads such as on-board cameras, according to a statement by the FAA.

The new rules would require drone owners to pay a $5 registration fee. Penalties go up to $27,000 for civil violations, $250,000 for criminal acts with up to three years behind bars.

It’s for your own good, of course.

“Make no mistake: unmanned aircraft enthusiasts are aviators and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. “Registration gives us an opportunity to work with these users to operate their unmanned aircraft safely. I’m excited to welcome these new aviators into the culture of safety and responsibility that defines American innovation.”

Uh huh. Nothing says “innovation” quite like the heavy hand of government.

As in the same “government” that completely botched the Obamacare website rollout. But trust them, the FAA drone licensing website will be totally secure, honest! Just give them your credit card number, your drivers license number, your home address, your social security number, your mother’s maiden name, and probably about 27 other items of personal information, and in return they’ll issue you a shiny little card that says “Official Obama Drone Operator.”

Make sure you renew it every 3 years too. Because once the government gets their claws into you, they never let go.
